Buying a new guitar can be an often exciting moment, but you have to stop your excitement getting in the way of making an informed decision.

The first thing that I will point out is that even if a guitar costs $5,000, it may not be better than a $2,000. The first rule when buying a new guitar is...

- No Matter how good you think the guitar is, how much you like the guitarist/band or are told how good the guitar is. DO NOT buy a ‘Signature’ guitar.

What a ‘Signature’ guitar is a guitarist’s guitar. E.g. Zakk Wylde, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn all have signature guitars. The biggest difference (Other than the price) is the looks. The thing about signature guitars is that they are very over priced, and only cost a lot because they have a guitarists name on it. So DO NOT buy one, you will only waste money.

Now another thing, you can buy a $100 guitar, or one that costs 10 times the price at $1,000. But the $1,000 guitar will not be the same value as the $100 guitar. Why? Because the $1,000 guitar is not 10 times better than the $100 guitar. It has strings, a bridge, a neck, machine heads etc. Once you realize this you find that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a good guitar.

Secondly the brand. Brands are really just the little stamp that appears on the headstock and of course the body shape. This may shock you but if you have ever said that Cort make bad guitars, you are also saying that Fender, Ibanez, Jackson and more make bad guitars because they are actually made in the Cort factory! So Cort take the best parts out of all the Guitars, so Cort could really be the best Guitar brand! But many people (including myself) prefer other brands. Personally I use Fender, but only because the specific guitar I play feels better than guitars 5 times the price!

Now, once you play through a lot of guitars at all different price ranges and have found a guitar you like the feel of. Play through every note on every string. Don’t play hard but just as you usually would pick a note, this is done to make sure there are no problems with the fretboard. If there is a buzz on any string, make sure you ask the shop assistant if they can get it fixed for you.

Also, when you buy a new guitar, make sure you ask the shop too get a professional setup done on the Guitar. What this is, is setting up the action correctly, adjusting the truss rod, the bridge, the nut and fixing up anything else that will be wrong with the guitar.

Now you should be ready to make an informed decision when buying a new guitar, so good luck!

Do you want to pick your first guitar? Picking your first guitar can be a difficult choice. There are so many guitars to choose from. Do you buy an acoustic guitar? Do you buy a classical guitar? Do you buy an electric guitar?

Buying your first guitar is an awesome experience. No instrument is cooler to play than the guitar. The guitarist is always the star of the bank. And let's face it, chicks dig them.

It is important to know how much money you can afford to spend before you start looking for a guitar. If you go to a local guitar store without a clear budget in mind, you will continue to pull the more expensive ones off the shelf. But, for a beginning guitar player, you don't need a really expensive one. You can probably get a good first guitar for around $300 to $500. Online you can also find some great deals on used beginner guitars.

Guitars have a beautiful sound and are a lot easier to learn how to play than most think possible. However, before you go out to buy one you need to know these tricks and tips to make sure you are getting the best guitar for your money. Online guitar stores are a great place to find the best guitars at the lowest prices. However, before buying a guitar online, I think that you should visit your local guitar shop so that you can look at the guitars in person and up close. You will want to see how the guitar feels in you hands, how it looks, and how it sounds. Take the guitar off the wall, plug it into an amp, grab a pick and start strumming. You should also look at buying an acoustic guitar. This is the best way to find out what guitar is the right one for you.

If you are having trouble narrowing down the guitar you want to buy, here are some good recommendations. For acoustic guitars, I love Takamine guitars, Martin guitars, Ovation guitars and epiphone guitars. For electric guitars, I would check out Ibanez guitars, Fender guitars and Gibson guitars.

Once you have found the guitar that you want to buy, check out the online stores to see if you can find one at the best price. I cannot stress enough the power of online stores. The prices are almost always lower.

Remember to look at some online guitar stores to find great prices on beginner guitars.

Guitars are generally made keeping in mind both the right handed and left handed players. Conventionally it is the dominant hand which is assigned the task of plucking or strumming the strings of the guitar. For the majority of people the dominant hand is the right hand.

Anatomy of Guitars is a required study for both the novice as well as experienced players to truly utilize this powerful musical instrument. Musical expression, tonal expression and dynamics etc are mainly determined by the plucking hand. The fretting hand is given the less significant mechanical task of gripping the strings.

Anatomy of Guitars include

Headstock, Nut, Neck joint or Heel, Strings, Body (acoustic guitar), Body (electric guitar), Pickups Lining, Binding, Purfling, Bridge, Pickguard, Neck, Electronics, Vibrato Arm, Fretboard, Frets, Truss rod, Inlays, Tuning

Identifying the Parts

Head Stock

It is the top part of this anatomy study, which bears the tuners.

Tuners

Tuners are positioned on the headstock of the instrument(top of the guitar). Tuners are the tools to tune the guitar. Fine tuners are also to be found on guitars with Floyd Rose systems

Nut

The nut is positioned just below the headstock of the guitar. The strings go through this right before the tuning keys.

Frets

Frets can be found on the guitar's neck. 22 to 24 frets are found normally.

Neck

The neck of a guitar is the place to rest the hand to fret chords, play scales etc. There are some necks on the anatomy of guitars, which are set before and others like a Fender Strat have the bolt on.

Position Markers

There are some dots on the guitar fretboard. They are called the Position markers used for easy reference, located typically on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th and 21st frets. Sometimes they can be on the side of the neck.

Sound Hole

The sound hole can be found on the top center of the body of an acoustic or acoustic electric guitar. The sound comes out from this hole.

Body

The body of the guitar is the base anatomy of guitars; it is the structure to hold.

Pickups

The electrical sound on an electric guitar and acoustic electric are produced by the pickups. Magnet constitutes the pickup of the guitar strings vibration and helps in generating the sound out of the amplifier.

PickGuard

PickGuard protects the guitar from scratches and other harms. Other use of pickguard for instance is to hold the pickups, knobs etc. But this is true on some guitars like the fender stratocaster etc.

Saddle

The saddle is situated on an acoustic guitars bridge. It is made of plastic, bone etc. On an electric guitar the bridge saddles is used to attune the height of the strings, set intonation and more.

Bridge

A guitars bridge is positioned at the bottom of a guitar where the strings are attached. Pegs hold on to the acoustic guitar strings and keep it attached.

Output Jack

The place to plug in the guitar cable is coming from an amplifier. Most of the time, it is an inch long.

Acoustic and electric guitars share many parts in common. They all have a body, neck, fretboard, and headstock as a total anatomy of guitars.

The guitar is of European origin. It was created in the medieval era. However, instruments from which the guitar is derived can be traced back as far as 4000 years. These instruments were first built in Asia and India and include the sitar and tanbur. One of the first obstacles that many who are learning how to play guitar encounter is the pain. Believe it or not, especially when first starting out, the guitar's strings can hurt one's fingers quite intensely. Another hurdle when learning how to play guitar is remembering how to play chords. There is quite a bit of memorization involved. One additional challenge for first-time guitarists is that of overcoming the stress involved with learning how to play the instrument. Although the physical pain associated with playing guitar cannot, for the most part, be avoided, many of the other difficulties can be helped with a learn guitar DVD.

Absolute Beginner in Guitar Lessons DVD

When one runs into problems with learning guitar, purchasing a DVD may be a really useful aid. The guitarist-in-training will be better able to overcome the fears and stresses associated with learning a new instrument. Learning how to play guitar through watching a DVD is as interactive and intimate as a private lesson without the cost. The person learning the instrument will also be able to work at his or her own pace; he or she can work as slow or as fast as necessary just by pushing play, pause, rewind or fast-forward.

If making that purchase is out of the question, one can also look into renting a learn guitar DVD from his or her local library. Many public libraries offer quite a large selection of DVDs for rent. Another good place to check for DVD rentals is a local video-store, such as Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

Some don't have the time or resources to go out and rent or buy a DVD. When this is the case, one can try browsing the Web for some tips and instructions on getting started with the guitar. There are plenty of people who are willing to help through YouTube, personal blogs, etc.

To conclude, there are many ways one can learn how to play guitar. While there are numerous obstacles one may encounter, it's important to stick with it! Purchasing a DVD may prove to be quite helpful. Otherwise, one should certainly look into renting a DVD on playing guitar, or at least browsing the Internet for help from other guitarists.

What to Look For in a Guitar Instructional DVD

Like anything else, it is worth doing a little comparison shopping to make sure that the guitar instructional DVD you choose will be right for your needs. The following tips can help make this search easier.

#1 Find Out Who Developed The DVD

If you are trying to find a high quality learning guitar DVD then it is important to find out if the DVD you are looking at was put together by a professional guitar player or instructor. After all, just about anyone can produce a DVD and put it on the market. What you should look for is a DVD which has been produced by a professional who has a good reputation as an guitar teacher. This is true whether you want a learning acoustic guitar DVD or one for electric guitar.

#2 Camera Angles

Something else to watch for is whether the guitar instructional DVD offers multiple camera angles. No matter what kind of learning DVD you are interested in, it is helpful to be able to see the hands of the player in the video from different angles so you can get a clear understanding of what they are doing with their hands as they play.

#3 Styles

Before buying any learning guitar DVD, find out what styles the DVD teaches. If you want to learn to play country style guitar, then a jazz guitar DVD may not be the right video for you. Most likely you would prefer to learn how to play many different styles.

Beginners don't know what they need to know.

Diligently following a guitar method will not necessarily make you a good guitarist. Information means different things to different people and everyone learns in different ways. When we begin an activity there is so much new information it is easy for the judgement to get distorted. People focus on what is not crucial and fail to recognise the importance of fundamental first principles.

Information is Temporal

When I realize a student could adjust a hand position to make things easier for themselves, I just tell them. Nip it in the bud, avoid the potential bad habit there and then. This information early in development is much better than years down the track when the bad habit is well learned. There is no magic formula for WHEN a student should learn something. In the case where you have a teacher, it is their responsibility to disseminate the right information at the right time to best aid the student.

Information is not generic

Even though students may come to a lesson saying that they are a complete beginner, each has an individual personal relationship with music and the guitar. Me as a teacher have no idea of a students past relationship with music, and depending on their background, body size, and what they already know will determine what information is useful. In my experience information is not generic; it has to be grafted, modified and personalized before it is really helpful to the student.

In conclusion it requires experience and know-how to sift through the mountains of information to find what you need, and sometimes you don't even know what you need to know making the task seemingly impossible. Your private teacher should give you the right information at the right time, developing sound technique and empowering the student with tools to overcome stumbling blocks and play freely – invaluable!

Music : Learn to Play Guitar

Learning to play the guitar is fast, easy, cheap, and really fun. At the minimum all you need is a starter acoustic guitar and some time to learn to read tabs and learn songs. Tabs or tablature are the musical sheets which tell you exactly where to put your finger and therefore what notes to play. Learning to read tabs may seem complicated but is actually pretty easy. Online you can find free guitar tabs for almost any guitar song you can think of, from Nirvana to the Strokes.

If you like the electric guitar sound and the added flexibility available with amps and different distortions, learning to play the electric guitar is basically the same. The main difference is the added equipment necessary, but with some great online deals available that include amps and headphones, getting started is just as easy as with acoustic guitars.

First off, I suggest you read our basic 5 lesson guitar introduction.

Below you can find other terrific free online lessons with different tips and tricks to get you started and then taking you through more advanced topics. I also highly recommend that you take some time to visit the online forum / message boards where there is a ton of discussions regarding beginner and advanced topics. Be sure to use this resource for getting all your doubts answered.

At the bottom you can find many low priced starter packs for both the acoustic and electric sets. There are also some incredible beginner guitar DVDs for learning quickly, as well as guitar books and cds for all guitar enthusiasts.

Learn to Play Guitar As A Hobby

How many times have you stood in front of the mirror, imaginary guitar around your neck, pretending to be rock star? If playing the guitar is what you enjoy, then stop playing around with an imaginary one, and pick up a real guitar instead.

Generally people at some stage start like to learn a musical instrument. Many leave it from the mid life while other does keep on playing throughout their life. Music become passion, hobby, and even earning food if you are learn very good playing guitar. More famous is electric guitar amongst all other types of guitars. Many beginners just jump on playing electric guitar. Now, there could be varied reasons, for relatively cheap buying of an instrument or you can learn it at ease. But, the main factor is the “Rock Star look” and basically this inspires a lot to many people to learn electric guitar.

Some people get confused between electric guitar and acoustic guitar. They sometimes misunderstand or overlap definition of both. Arch tops – a type of electric guitar is manufactured in a same way as the acoustic guitar are produced. They differ quite in their own way. Electric guitar specification is electric powered amplifiers to carry out the operation successfully. While acoustic guitars depend on the body’s vigor and create the quality sound and volume. But electric guitar mechanism can be explained by use of pickups & amplifiers to push the sound.

Electric guitar has the ability to generate a rocking sound for what this electric guitar is known for. It has many features which can thrills the audience eye’s and helps to catches their attention through high waves of electric sound waves. A good or professional electric guitarist with his magic hands that works on strings and chords with some musical notes of rock bands having heavy metal music genre. This is far better compared to down range of an acoustic version. But, effects such as overdrive increased sustain are possible to achieve.

Some more points to differentiate through design of their acoustic cousins. Electric guitar designed specification can at a glance is much to give you a good synopsis. But if you don’t know then electric guitars are available in creative designs like the “Flying V” comfortable for playing in different styles. Some of the customary designs that is more common to people are Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster style.

Differences do not end here, but even the strings of electric guitar are classically thinner because the strings need not to echo the sound effect compare to the strings of acoustic guitars. As you know, it more relies on the electric sound amplifier to produce the best quality of sound. Well, you will also find that electric guitar strings are much closer to guitar’s neck and so with needs less efforts to play it. Electric bass guitar is the exceptional case. Guitarist has only 4 and thick strings to play with it. Electric bass guitar strings is much thicker as compared to other electric guitar.

With all these differences you can come to know why any beginner will like to opt for electric guitar. A beginner should focus his mind for learning guitar with the required tutorial. Thus, enjoy your playing with electric guitar to shake the people of your town.

If you think learning to play a musical instrument is difficult, then you haven't learned how to play the guitar. You may not become a musical genius overnight, but in just a few short lessons you can learn how to play the guitar and be well on your way to a consummate professional.

There are essentially two elements of learning to play the guitar: positioning and chords. Once you learn these elements you will be equipped with all you need to begin playing the guitar.

While you are anxious to play the guitar, you must first learn how to hold the guitar. Many people think they only need to place the guitar in their lap and they're ready to play. Holding your guitar incorrectly can actually affect the sound your instrument generates. When you play your guitar you will either play it sitting or standing. When you play your guitar sitting down, you want to be sure the guitar rests comfortably in your lap. The main thing to remember is that you don't want your body to support the guitar. Standing and playing the guitar is more of a presentation style.

You will hold the guitar like you would if you were sitting, but you place one foot in front of you to prevent stress on your back. When you first learn how to play the guitar, holding the guitar may seem awkward. Just give it some time and it will eventually seem natural to you.

Once you feel comfortable holding your guitar, it's time to focus on positioning. Positioning refers to what you do with your hand to play music using the guitar. Let's start with the left hand. The longest part of the guitar, the neck, is the area of the guitar where you will position your fingers and thumb so that you can create the great music afforded to the guitar. You should not place too much force against the fretboard when you play a note.

Your right hand is responsible for picking, plucking, or strumming the strings. You can decide for yourself how to play the guitar using either method. The proper way to hold your hand when you play the guitar with a pick is to make a fist with your thumb on the outside of your hand.

The pick slides between your thumb and index finger.

You then pick the strings in an upward motion. To play the guitar with your fingers, or pluck the strings, you use your thumb and index finger. Like when you use a pick, you pluck the strings in an upward motion. Strumming involves playing all the strings all at once. If you're wondering how to play the guitar if you use a left-handed guitar, you will position your fingers in mirror image of the instructions presented here.

Although you are just starting out, you are probably anxious to start actually learning how to play the guitar. There is one more important element to learn before you can actually playing music. It doesn't matter what genre of music you are interested in playing, you will need to be able to recognize chords to play music. A chord chart represents the neck of the guitar and indicates by using "X" marks, hollow circles, and numbered circled how to play a particular chord.

The fretboard consists of six strings and five frets. The hollow circles in a chord chart indicate strings that you play.

The numbered circles indicate which finger to use to play the chord. Neglecting to include your thumb, associate each finger with a number beginning with the number one (for example, the index finger would be 1, the middle finger would be 2, and so on). The "X" on the chord chart indicates that you should not play that string. Once you learn how to play the guitar and learn the five major chords (C, A, G, E, D) it will be easier to learn how to play just about any song.

Generally, guitar picks are isosceles triangle-shaped ones made up of different materials to play guitars. Guitar picks are made up of various materials including, plastic, nylon, rubber, tortoiseshell, bone, wood, felt, stone, polycarbonate, Lexan and metal. Although different manufacturers use different shapes, the most common shape is isosceles triangle with highly rounded two equal corners and less rounded third corner. You can also go for customized guitar picks of your taste.

Customized Guitar Picks

Most of the guitar picks have a sort of imprint. This may range from imprinting manufacturers’ logos to fully customized guitar picks for artists. In addition, guitar picks come with signatures and logos of popular bands and musicians. For example, Rick Nielson mass-distributed customized guitar picks of “Cheap Trick,” a renowned rock band. Customized guitar picks evolved over time, as the printing technology evolved. Even many guitar enthusiasts started collecting various types of custom guitar picks, as guitar picks have become more colorful with attractive designs and look. You can get custom picks from music concerts, since at times many guitarists throw their used guitar picks on the crowd. You may even notice some celebrity guitarists selling their guitar picks.

Guitar Picks Made of Bone

Bone guitar picks in general and many in particular favor dinosaur bone guitar picks. These guitar picks made of bone come in natural colors and some of them are even transparent. Dinosaur bone guitar picks are hand-made and fully fossilized or agatized. Bone guitar picks are ideal for rock guitarists. However, these picks are relatively costlier than picks made up of other materials.

Types of Picks and Music Styles

Guitarists use different types of picks of different thickness to generate their desired sound. The thickness of the guitar also depends on the kind of strings and playing styles. Electric guitar players who play rock and metal music prefer thicker picks to produce more controllable, delicate and great music. Guitar players who play farthest genres, such as, black metal, death metal or punk rock prefer soft guitar picks. Many Jazz guitar players prefer to use very thick guitar picks, since they like heavy gauge strings. However, there is no written rule on selecting a particular pick. It is purely based on personal choice. Steel guitar picks are believed to be producing much brighter sounds than that of plastic picks. However, steel picks may damage the finish of the acoustic guitars.

Finding the Thickness of the Guitar Picks

Several of the manufacturers, including, Alicem Jim, Dunlop and Teckpick, imprint the thickness of their picks thousands or in mm on the pick itself. Popular guitar manufacturers like Fender, Gibson, Ibanez and Peavey sometimes used cryptic way of denoting the thickness of the picks.

Therefore, if you have the passion for guitar picks and want a celebrity signature, it is better to opt for customized guitar picks. You can claim you are a collector too.

If you go shopping for Yamaha acoustic guitars online, you need to be cautious. Things aren't always what they seem online when it comes to certain things--like buying guitars.

Of course, you could always stay on the safe side and only shop for Yamaha acoustic guitars online at the Yamaha website. If not them, you could shop for the guitar you want online at the sites of known and respected musical instrument retailers. But, if you do this, keep in mind the rule that you don't want to spend less than $400 on your guitar.

The thing is, many of you are looking for a guitar that costs less than $400. You may be beginners, or you may have children who are just getting into the guitar. You feel that it's not justified to spend too much money on this Yamaha acoustic guitar that you're looking to get. With that in mind, how can you locate the instrument you want within the price range you want while looking online for it? For many people, the answer becomes: "eBay".

It's true that eBay is a great option for anyone who wants to find a good acoustic guitar at a lower than usual price. But this is where the note of caution comes in. You see, Yamaha has produced nearly 800 different models of acoustic guitar. Some are higher end, some are lower end. Some are steel-strung, others are nylon-strung "classical" instruments. Still others are electro-acoustic guitars. Therefore, before you shop online at eBay for the guitar, you first need to do some background research and know the guitar that you're looking for.

You can contact Yamaha's customer service department for help in this area. You can also contact them to help you if you see what looks like a promising Yamaha guitar online at eBay but aren't sure if seeing can be believing. The people at Yamaha customer service should have all this information available. Sometimes, if you are looking at a guitar line that has been discontinued, you may need to let them know that so they will know where to search for it. The information should be available to them in any case, and in turn available to you. Wikipedia will also provide some details on the most famous product lines. But rely on Wikipedia as just one reference as anyone can post items there.. Check out online guitar magazines and ask local retailers if they know anything about a prospective Yamaha guitar that you might see listed. You may also find useful articles on eBay affiliated online auction houses, as they often specialize on a single product. One example of such a site is http://yamahaacousticguitars.usacousticguitarstore.com.

Secondly, when comparing and considering prices of the Yamaha acoustic guitar, and when looking at others' bids, remember that the following factors are what drive the price:

*The guitar's age *The guitar's quality of construction *The guitar's condition *Yamaha's suggested retail price when it was new *The rarity of the particular model *Personal taste

And finally, keep a sharp lookout for certain auctions and amateur salesman's buzzwords that should send up warning signs for you--to either not bid too high, or to not buy at all:

*"Vintage": Sounds impressive, but it may be meaningless. Every instrument is "vintage" of the year it was made. So if you go for a vintage guitar, make sure it is vintage of a year that is known for a good model.

*"Antique": Only a quality guitar ages and gets better like a fine wine. An originally cheap guitar just ages into vinegar. So just like the vintage buzzword, you need to check out if the model is a good one.

*"Rare": Yamaha hand-crafted guitars might be rare. Never-exported and pre-exported models are rare. But most Yamaha acoustic guitars were made for mass production, and they are definitely not rare.
